Dr Sibusiso Mchunu
Dean of Students, Nelson Mandela University

Dr Sibusiso Mchunu has been involved in student services for more than 20 years.  

Before joining Nelson Mandela University he was Deputy Dean of Students at Wits University; Director: Student Services and Manager: Student Entrepreneurship at the University of KwaZulu-Natal; and Dean of Students at both the University of Zululand and Mangosuthu University of Technology.

Dr Mchunu is a former Executive Committee member of the South African Association of Student Affairs Professionals (SAASSAP), the professional affiliation body for South African Deans of Students and senior Student Affairs officials. He was also the member of the CHE 2010 Institutional Audit Team that conducted an institutional audit of the University of Limpopo.

Dr Mchunu has been a Fulbright Scholar and a British Council Scholar. He was a founder of the Khwezilokusa Scholarship Fund, which aimed at assisting needy students to register. He also organised and hosted the first National Dialogue on Gender Based Violence in Higher Education in 2017.

His PhD in Leadership Studies, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, focused on research managing relationships in tertiary institutions and learning from students and staff perceptions of Student Support Services.

Dr Mchunu is also a graduate with two master’s degrees: an MCom in Organisational and Management Systems from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and an MEd from the University of Newcastle (UK).

He obtained a BA (Honours) in Applied Linguistics from the University of Natal and a B Paed from the University of Zululand. Dr Mchunu is also qualified with a Programme in Advanced Business Communication from the University of South Africa (UNISA).
