Dr Luvo Fatman is a medical doctor and highly experienced cytopathologist with more than 17 years of clinical, academic, and diagnostic expertise. She completed her MBChB at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2003 and went on to obtain an MSc in Cytopathology (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch in 2014. She trained in cytopathology through Wits University and the National Health Laboratory Service, where she has been a key member of the cytopathology unit for well over a decade.
Her professional portfolio spans clinical service, academic teaching, postgraduate supervision, and specialist training. Dr Fatman has played a central role in registrar training within anatomical pathology, medical technologist preparation for board examinations, and cytology teaching for clinicians, doctors, and nursing personnel. She is actively involved in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) training — both palpation and ultrasound-guided — and oversees the FNA service across the Johannesburg region, running multiple clinics at teaching hospitals and peripheral sites.
A lecturer at Wits University and an affiliate of both Stellenbosch University and Wits, Dr Fatman contributes extensively to postgraduate education. She supervises and co-supervises master’s-level research and has served as an external examiner. Her academic contributions include presentations at national and international conferences and active participation in multidisciplinary clinicopathological teams across tertiary institutions.
Her clinical and research interests include thyroid cytopathology and paediatric cytology. Dr Fatman’s career reflects a sustained commitment to diagnostic excellence, high-quality training, and advancing cytopathology practice in South Africa.
