Riana Johnson was born in Humansdorp, a small town in the Eastern Cape, and grew up on a farm in Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape.  She matriculated in 1983 at Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood and studied at the University of the Free State where she obtained her B.Soc.Sc (Nursing) in 1989 and Hons. B.Soc.Sc (nursing) in 1990.  Riana obtained her Diploma in Operating Room Nursing in 1994 and the Advanced University Diplomas in Nursing Education (2010) and Health Care Management (2012).  In 2012 she received a certificate for the successful completion of the requirements of the Management Development Institute (UCLA/AMREF/UCTGSB/Johnson&Johnson).

Riana started working at Kovsie Health at the University of the Free State in 1996 as a professional nurse rendering health care services to students.  Currently she is the HOD (Deputy Director) at the Health and Wellness Centre at UFS. Riana is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society (Golden Key member) and Chairs the Free State and Northern Cape Region of SAACHS.
